General Surgery

More than eight million people in Haiti do not have access to surgical care. The Grand Anse Surgery Project (GASP) has helped change that reality for the people of Jeremie, Haiti.

GASP is addressing the lack of general surgical services in Jeremie, Haiti. The city’s hospital does not have general surgery services; therefore, the surgical need of the local and regional population is not being met.

GASP is addressing this need in three general ways; General Surgery, Surgical Consultation, Education and Training and Donation of Surgical Supplies and Medication.

In 2016, at the invitation of the Grand Anse Women’s Health Program, the Grand Anse Surgery Project, (GASP) began periodic visits to Haiti to provide breast surgery and to help build an in-country surgical program in Jeremie, Haiti.

The surgical mission quickly expanded to include thyroid surgery and hernia surgery. The surgeons will do other types of major general surgery when necessary, but this is their focus.

In November of 2017, thanks to the generosity of the Brazilian U.N. committee, the two hospital operating rooms were totally modernized and the ability to provide safe, accessible, affordable surgical care grew dramatically. Patients have also benefited from the loan of a Sono Site state of the art ultrasound machine for the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer patients.

Our current fundraising goal is to outfit the two newly modernized operating rooms with modern surgical tools and equipment.
